Bone Broth: Why I Drink it Regularly!
Updated: Apr 29
Here's why I drink bone broth almost every day! (keep reading for my recipe).
Consuming bone broth dates back to prehistoric times, when we used EVERY part of the animal. Bone broth is EXTREMELY rich in vitamins, minerals, & amino acids. Not all bone broth is created equally, though! The bone broth you find in the stores today, doesn't even come CLOSE comparing to the nutritional value you'll find in homemade, slow-cooked bone broth!
A good bone broth will have a nice, gelatinous layer of fat that forms, as it cools. It's that gelatinous layer that is ESPECIALLY rich in the amino acids that help to heal the gut lining. Gelatinous bone broth is also rich in collagen, which is really great for your skin, joints, & hair. Bone broth has not only been shown to help heal leaky gut & improve overall digestion...it's also great for the immune system, nervous system, & can help to improve your sleep. Plus, it's SUPER EASY to make!
Crockpot Bone Broth Recipe
Bake the bones for 30 minutes at 400 degrees (flipping after 15 minutes). Baking them first helps to release more nutrients, collagen, and gelatin!
After baking, place the bones & whatever fatty, greasy goodness is left on the baking sheet, from baking the bones, into the crockpot.
Add 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (this helps to get all the collagen out of the bones).
Add whatever spices & scraps of vegetables you want to the crockpot (some ideas are sea salt, pepper, chopped onion, garlic, rosemary, oregano, thyme, celery & celery greens, carrots & carrot greens, leeks, etc.)
Fill the crockpot with 8-10 cups of filtered water.
Set the crockpot to HIGH and let it cook, until it comes to a boil.
Then, set the crockpot to LOW and let slow cook another 12-24 hours (the longer it cooks, the more intense the flavor will be & the higher in nutrients it will be). If you struggle with histamine issues, you can use an instapot and cook it for a shorter period of time.
Strain the broth and let it cool (a good bone broth will have a nice layer of gelatinous fat that forms, as it cools).
Enjoy immediately, can it, or freeze it for a rainy day!
